Privacy Policy

Last updated October 24, 2026

Kept makes private memorial pages and books. This policy explains what we collect, on this site and on the memorial pages we host, and what we do with it. Kept is run by LateralTranslucence LLC (“Kept,” “we,” “us”).

What we collect

When you contact us

The name and email address you put in one of our forms, and anything you write to us. The form sends them to our inbox by email; we don’t store them in a database.

When we build a memorial page

What the family gives us to build it: the person’s name and dates, their life story, photos, service details and the organizations they’d like gifts to go to. If we talk by phone, we note what you tell us. If you mail us prints, we scan them and mail them back to you.

When you come to us through a funeral home

If a funeral home offers Kept to you, they send us the details needed to start the page, like the person’s name, dates and the family’s contact information. The funeral home’s name may appear on the page and in the book. Kept still builds, hosts and protects the page, and this policy still applies to it.

When someone adds to a memorial page

  • A photo, its caption, and the name it’s signed with, if any.
  • A memory, and the name it’s signed with.
  • A one-way hash of the visitor’s IP address. It can’t be turned back into the address, and we use it only to limit how much one person can post in a short time. We don’t keep the address itself. Our hosting provider keeps standard request logs, which include IP addresses, for a short time.

Before a photo is uploaded, it’s saved again in the visitor’s browser, which removes the location and camera details a phone stores inside the file.

When you pay

Families who order from us directly pay by an invoice from Stripe, which takes the payment. We keep the name and email the invoice goes to, the amount, and whether it’s been paid. Card and bank details go straight to Stripe; we never see or store them.

When we ship the book

The name, shipping address and phone number the book goes to. We share these with the printing company only to print and ship it.

How we use it

To build, run and print the memorial page and book, to answer you, and to keep spam off the pages. We don’t sell personal information, use it for advertising, or share it beyond the services listed below.

Who can see a memorial page

Only people with the page’s passphrase, which the family chooses and can change at any time. Memorial pages ask search engines not to list them. Photos are kept in private storage, and the links that show them expire after an hour. The family, and the people at Kept who build and support the page, can see everything on it.

Anyone with the passphrase can see what’s on the page, and could save or share it. Keep that in mind when deciding who gets it.

Services that handle it for us

  • Supabase stores the pages, photos and memories.
  • Vercel hosts the site.
  • SendGrid delivers the messages from our forms.
  • Stripe sends invoices and takes payments.
  • Fathom counts visits to memorial pages (see below).
  • A printing company prints the book from the photos and memories on the page, and ships it to the address the family gives us.

Each handles the information only to provide its service to us.

Cookies and analytics

When someone enters a memorial page’s passphrase, the page sets a cookie so they don’t have to enter it again. It lasts 90 days. The family’s admin area works the same way. These are the only cookies we set, and they’re needed for the pages to work.

On memorial pages, Fathom counts visits and a few actions, like a photo being added. It uses no cookies and collects no personal information, and nothing a visitor types is ever sent to it. This marketing site has no analytics at all.

How long we keep it

  • Messages to us: as long as we need them to help you and run the business.
  • A memorial page and everything on it: for as long as the page is up. That’s the first year from launch, and longer if the family keeps it up.
  • When a page is closed for good, we delete its photos and memories within 30 days, unless the law requires us to keep something.
  • Items removed from a page: kept hidden, so they can be restored, until the page is closed or someone asks us to delete them for good.
  • Our hosting and storage providers keep standard request logs and backups for a limited time. When we delete something, it can remain in those backups until they expire, usually within 7 days.

Removing a photo or memory

The family can remove anything from their page at any time, from their admin area, and it disappears from the page right away. Removed items are kept, hidden, so they can be put back if something was removed by mistake.

To have something deleted for good, or if you added something yourself and want it gone, write to us at loren@lateraltranslucence.com. Tell us which page it’s on and what it is, and we’ll take care of it within 7 days. If you believe something on a page is yours, see Copyright & Takedowns.

Children

Kept isn’t meant for children, and we don’t knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. Guests may add photos that show children. A parent or guardian can ask us to remove one, and we will.

Your choices and rights

You can ask us what we hold about you, and ask us to correct or delete it. Depending on where you live, you may have other rights too, such as under California or European law. We’ll honor these requests wherever you live, and answer within 30 days. Write to us at loren@lateraltranslucence.com.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we’ll post the new version here with its date. If a change affects how we use what’s already on a memorial page, we’ll tell the family by email first.
