What is a memorial website?
A memorial website is a page online, made for one person who has died, where family and friends gather photos, stories and the details of the service. It gives everyone one place to share what they remember, and somewhere to come back to after the funeral is over.
What goes on a memorial website?
Usually a portrait, the dates and places of their life, a tribute or obituary, the service times and directions, and a wall where people add photos and memories. Some list charities to give to in their name.
A Kept page has room for all of it:
- Their name, dates and a portrait, at the top.
- A tribute in the family’s words, as paragraphs or as a verse.
- Each part of the service, with the date, time, place and a link for directions.
- A photo wall, with a caption and the name of whoever shared each one.
- Memories, each signed by the person who wrote it.
- Charities the family would like gifts to go to, if any.
How is it different from an obituary?
An obituary is written once, usually by the family, and published for anyone to read. A memorial website keeps growing: everyone who knew them can add a photo or a story, often ones the family has never heard.
Many families do both. The obituary announces the death and the service; the memorial page is where people say what the person meant to them.
Who can see a memorial website?
It depends on the site. Many are public, and anyone who searches the person’s name can find them. Kept’s are private: only people with the passphrase can open them, and they ask search engines not to list them.
Private or public covers how to choose between the two.
How long does a memorial website stay up?
That depends on who hosts it. Every Kept plan includes the first year online. After that, the family can keep it up for $79 a year, or for good for $249 once, and can ask for a free copy of every photo and memory any time.
Can a memorial website become a book?
With Kept, yes. When the family is ready, every photo and story on the page is laid out in a softcover memorial book, usually about six weeks after the service.
Turning memories into a memorial book explains how.
How do we make one?
With Kept, you tell us about them in a short form or a phone call and send photos however is easiest. We build the page by the next business day, and you see it and change anything before anyone else is invited.
